The reasons of Governor Davis losing the recall election are analyzed. His attempt to govern from the center alienated Democratic allies and cost him the moderate suburban vote whilst his failure to respond to the crashing economy and the energy crisis further eroded voter confidence.

The irony that California's Governor Gray Davis was recalled, in spite of a long list of substantial legislation passed during his tenure, is highlighted. Ultimately what brought him down was his lack of leadership qualities during the energy and fiscal crises that dogged the state.
