Nancy Pelosi calls herself a conservative catholic but church authorities in her San Francisco district disagreed to this saying that she presents herself as a 'credible catholic'. Many in the church argue that the catholic politicians are held to a higher standard than average lay people and because their positions and votes help shape public opinion and policy, their public views should square with their professed Catholicism.
