Democratic opposition and democratization theory
Article Abstract:
Pacted transitions, in which regime moderates and opposition moderates negotiate to squeeze out hardliners from both sides, are possible in only two types of non-democratic regime. The concept must be substantially revised to fit a general democratic theory of political opposition. To be more broadly successful, a democratic opposition must erode backing for the non-democratic regime while building support for a credible democratic alternative. The theory of the oppositional role of an ethical civil society also needs revision because, when misunderstood, such a society can be problematic in a functioning democracy.

Democratization, nationalism and regional security in the southern Caucasus
Article Abstract:
Democratization in the Caucasus region has actually contributed to internal and international strife in the area. By permitting the expression of inflammatory opinions and providing a forum for nationalistic expression, democratic reforms have fostered conflict. The extent of democracy's contribution to regional instability appears highly dependent upon contextual factors such as ethnic diversity, economic conditions, the Soviet collapse and governmental weakness in the new states. The international community should be more sensitive to possible trade-offs between security and democratization.
