Democratization or oligarchic restructuring? The politcs of reform in Malaysia
Article Abstract:
This article discusses the political stability and industrialization of Malaysia, which is considered an achievement of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamed, despite the unpopularity of some of his policies. The author discusses the prime minister's authoritarian attitudes towards governing, often at the expense of democratic checks and balances; despite the political activity of opponent Ibrahim Anwar, which emphasized democratization as means to a political end, little political change or reform has occurred in Malaysian politics.

Globalization and the liberal democratic state
Article Abstract:
Increasing globalization calls for a reassessment of the nature of democratic politics. Sovereign states must take into consideration the limits imposed on them by economic, legal, political and military interdependence. States must also deal with questions of accountability to ethnic groups within their borders. The global implications of sovereign and territorial decisions must be considered, along with the authority of multinational bodies. Global interdependence must be based on the foundations of democratic thought.
