Smoking out tobacco's influence
Article Abstract:
The anti-smoking media campaign in California, funded by the cigarette tax contained in 1988's Proposition 99, has been very successful in reducing smoking levels in the state. However, Governors George Deukmejian and Pete Wilson seem to be unwilling to take credit for the campaign's success, and the campaign itself has begun to falter. During this time, smoking among teenagers has started to rise again, while the rate of decline among adults has become stable. Public opinion about Wilson will be strongly influenced by the success or failure of the latest phase in the campaign, which will aim directly at the tobacco industry.

Insurance Commissioner
Article Abstract:
Republican Charles Quackenbush won the post of California's Insurance Commissioner by a margin of 50% over the 44% received by Democrat Diane Martinez. Despite Quackenbush's convincing victory, it was noted that he spent almost $2 million in the campaign compared to the $51,000 spent by Martinez. Quackenbush relied on insurance industry contributions for his campaign. Some Democrats are of the opinion that Quackenbush would have been defeated if they had fielded a higher-profile and better-financed candidate.
