Effects of homeownership on household savings
Article Abstract:
Research into the issue of the effects of homeownership on household savings to develop a causal link between savings and tenure choice reveal positive impacts on total and non-housing savings by the value of the house chosen. Savings behavior can be altered by choice of domicile. Homeownership has significant effects on the composition of household assets and overall savings; however, the findings indicate that the choice of a home in the average price range does not substantially alter the level of household savings. Research results also indicate that increases in the value of chosen homes result in a substantial increase in non-housing savings.

Intertemporal tenure choices
Article Abstract:
Data from the Michigan Panel Survey on Income Dynamics is used to study relationships between length of stay in household and variables such as household size; age, sex, and marital status of head of household; rental versus ownership status; race, education, and income. A four-year study such as this is superior to a point-in-time study in that it allows clearer indications of tenure status. Household leads, lags, and condition duration are shown to affect tenure status choices and their timing.
