The banking industry, through the American Bankers Assn, is working for legislation which would promote fraud prevention and penalize those who steal personal financial information by misleading bank employees. Bank executive Boris Melnikoff appeared before the House Banking and Financial Services Committee to provide support for the Financial Information Privacy Act of 1998 in which obtaining customer information through deceptive and fraudulent means would be penalized as a federal crime.

Computer security beats out robbery as top risk
Article Abstract:
A survey conducted by SECURITY magazine among financial services firms indicated that computer security now poses the greatest risk to them followed by bank robberies. To ensure security, financial services security departments have installed still and video surveillance equipment, electronic access controls and document shredding and destruction equipment. Almost 60% of the firms provide their employees with a door access card with magnetic stripe technology.
