Formalized mentoring
Article Abstract:
A purposeful, systematic course of affirmative action is prerequisite for ensuring that women and minorities succeed after gaining access to good jobs. Mentoring is a formalized way in which experienced staff provide assistance to less experienced personnel. Mentoring includes activities such as teaching, coaching, motivating, and sponsoring. Results from more than 400 studies suggest that a successful mentor-protege relationship is the key to mentor program success. A four-part program is suggested for assuring that mentors know how to provide effective types of protection and assistance: (1) careful selection and matching of mentors and proteges, (2) training of mentors, (3) monitoring the mentor process, and (4) identifying benefits and making recommendations based on the completed mentoring experience.

Disability and employment: a guide for managers in the public sector
Article Abstract:
Managers who work with employees who have mental or physical disabilities should evaluate such workers individually, based on their ability to accomplish basic job requirements. Managers seeking to evaluate on the basis of ability should: (1) avoid generalizations or stereotypes about disabilities, (2) treat employees as individuals, (3) use business priorities when setting employment needs, (4) provide clear statements of job duties, and (5) establish reasonable job evaluation performance standards. A growing body of research indicates that disabled employees demonstrate performance which equals or betters that of average employees in terms of safety, job performance, attendance, and turnover.
