Latent demand for urban housing in the People' s Republic of China
Article Abstract:
A study has been conducted to develop an econometric model that estimates the propensity of a Chinese family to build its own dwelling or inhabit state-owned housing, and the size of the dwelling it would occupy in either case. The urban housing policy of the People's Republic of China was also reviewed. Findings have revealed some important conclusions. The mechanism that assigns state-owned housing to urban families produces avery different match between family characteristics and housing space than does a mechanism based on optimizing expressions of family housing demand. It has been found that the characteristics omitted from the extensive list of exogenous family characteristics included in the econometric analysis were very influential. Families in state-owned housing were found to prefer larger dwellings if they had the opportunity to build their own.

Analysis of the dynamics of housing tenure choice in Britain
Article Abstract:
The dynamics of housing tenure choice is examined. Data from the 1958 birth cohort in the British National Child Development Study were used to describe the dynamics of individuals' first entry to one of two major housing tenures in Great Britain, namely owner-occupation or tenancy. Analysis reveals that the initial major tenure decision strongly influences the distribution of life-years in each tenure even with tenure mobility throughout a person's life. In the context of a competing risk hazard model, the impact of individual characteristics and regional housing as well as labor market environment on the first tenure choice was modeled. In light of the observed matrix of subsequent tenure transitions, these impacts on the timing and destination of initial major tenure also determine the number of years a person uses in each tenure over a lifetime.
