Debt, deficits, and inflation: an application to the public finances of India
Article Abstract:
The interrelation of inflation, the ratio of debt to GNP, and budget deficits as applied to the public finance condition in India is discussed. It is suggested that current Indian debt policies are not consonant to solvency goals. Even the use of an inflation tax would not suffice to keep the economy afloat. Appropriate fiscal policies such as the diminution of the primary deficit would be necessary if the economy were to survive the financial crisis.
