Oakland
Article Abstract:
Oakland, CA is in dire need of economic rehabilitation following the exodus of big business from the city into the more lucrative opportunities in nearby counties. Poverty continues to plague the city, with one in five residents depending on public assistance. Furthermore, racial factors determine residents' economic performance. African Americans who comprise 44% of the population only make a third of the city's total earning power. Challenges in alleviating Oakland's poor economic performance should be a top priority of its public officials.
