Opposition in the British political system
Article Abstract:
The UK Labor Party's landslide victory in May 1997 after 18 years in opposition reflects the resurrection of the longstanding British system of alternating party governments. This type of political opposition is legitimized and maintained by the institutional characteristics of the UK Parliament, the popularly accepted concept of the opposition functioning as a national shadow government, and the fair and balanced presentation of the opposition viewpoint by the national broadcast media. The Labor Party's 1997 success is mainly attributable to its ability to adapt, or reposition, itself ideologically.
