Optimal metering in the bottleneck congestion model
Article Abstract:
A study determined optimal metering on limited-access commuter expressways. This analysis ascertained if manipulation of the rate at which vehicles enter these expressways can effectively minimize commuter travel costs. This objective was achieved through the use of a modified version of the bottleneck congestion model that considers the time spent by drivers in reaching their destinations after entering the road. The choice of an entry rate by the highway authority, which allows it to supplant queueing time with travel time, is based on the speed-flow curve of the road. Findings revealed that metering can be beneficial. Its benefits increase as the speed that would prevail when there is no metering decreases and as the speed-flow curve becomes flatter.

Airport capacity and congestion when carriers have market power
Article Abstract:
The growing problem of congestion in airports when aircraft carriers themselves have market power is analyzed. Congestion pricing is suggested as one of the solutions to this problem.
