On discrete choice models of housing demand
Article Abstract:
Specifications of models of discrete choice are examined in calculating housing consumption for policy simulation and projection purposes. Housing consumption is seen comprehensively, with a selection among three types of owning a home, five kinds of rentals, and a non-head of household option. A familiar multinomial logit specification is negated by a number of specification tests. A variety of nested multinomial logit models of multinomial selection that permit a richer substitution array among the disparate housing selections is possible. Strong and feasible differences among nesting structures are revealed by estimations of different nesting structures.
