Personal morality in a professional context
Article Abstract:
Personal moral codes have an important effect on the public and professional lives of individuals. People must recognize the great importance of personal moral codes and put them into effect in the work environment. There are three main categories in which personal ethics is being recognized as being of great importance in the private and public sectors: leadership, codes of ethics and ethics education, and topical issues in ethics. Ethics is becoming increasingly important for attracting people to service in the public sector. In the public sector, areas that should be focused on to improve an entity's moral code include the entity's sense of mission, policy development, and decision making.

The Ontario government has taken steps to promote ethical behavior among Ontario municipal councils. Legislation passed by the Ontario government that will promote ethical behavior by local governments includes the Act to Provide for Freedom of Information and Protection of Individual Privacy in Municipalities and Local School Boards, which ensures the public's freedom of information at all levels of government; the Municipal Elections Act, which limits campaign contributions; and the Municipal Conflict of Interest Act, which regulates conflicts of interest among politicians and public administrators.

The ethical dimension in public service
Article Abstract:
The problem of ethics in government is a difficult one because ethics and government often seem to be contradictory and difficult to define. The issue of ethics in government entails introducing fairness into everything from policy making to personnel management practices. Public administrators and politicians must constantly decide between competing rights of different constituencies, which often leads to ethical dilemmas. Another area ripe for ethical dilemma lies in the dichotomy between the public servant serving both the public and the government.
