Primary election
Article Abstract:
The California primary highlighted the reasons state Republicans are concerned about the Nov 1996 election. GOP nominee Bob Dole needs to give more attention and money to California since he is trailing far behind Clinton according to opinion polls. If he ignores California, Dole will be repeating the mistake committed in 1992 by George Bush and may lose the election. The GOP majority in the State Assembly could also be challenged. Propositions 200 and 201 on no-fault insurance and attorney fees lost their appeal, as Proposition 202 on contingent attorney fees became the center of attention towards the end of the campaign.

Dole and California
Article Abstract:
Republican presidential nominee Robert Dole is waffling about waging an all-out effort to win California since opinion polls show him trailing Bill Clinton by a wide margin. Dole appears ready to concede the state to Clinton in a replay George Bush's disastrous 1992 strategy. Some California Republicans believe Dole can win the state because Clinton has failed to address issues important to Californians. However, Clinton has visited California more often than Dole, who appears to be out-of-step with the state's youth culture.
