States may alter mental illness policies for gun purchase
Article Abstract:
Many U.S. states are re-examining the rules for submitting the names of individuals with mental disabilities who are barred from purchasing guns. Before the shootings at Virginia Tech, states have not paid much attention to the federal Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, and have been submitting only a small number of names to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. Policy recommendations by the Bazelon Center are also presented.
