The ALRB in the '90s: do not disturb ... agency asleep
Article Abstract:
The reputation of California's Agricultural Labor Relations Board (ALRB) as pro-union in the '70s has changed to pro-grower in the '90s. During the term of former Governor Jerry Brown, the ALRB was an effective forum for workers and unions to resolve their problems. But after George Deukmejian took over Brown's position, the agency began to lose its credibility. The number of complaints filed by workers on the board has dropped from 1,302 in 1979-80 to 362 in 1990-91. Critics doubt that the ALRB under the present administration of Governor Pete Wilson would regain its credibility.

The state's libraries struggle to do more with less
Article Abstract:
California's public librarieshave been severely affected by budget cuts. There are periodic closures of public library systems in some of the state's counties and some libraries have been forced to closed down due to the lack of funds. The lack of funds are forcing libraries to look for ways to extend their meager budgets without cutting their services. The state government is expected to continue its present policy of cutting the budgets of California's public libraries.
