The GOP descends on San Diego
Article Abstract:
The Republican convention to be held at San Diego, CA in Aug 1996 promises to bring the party's rising stars to the limelight, such as San Diego Mayor Susan Golding. The convention assumes significance since Golding is a probable candidate for governorship once Pete Wilson's term ends in 1998. The meteoric rise of Golding can be traced to 1984, when she fought Lynn Schenk for a place on the San Diego Board of Supervisors and her election to mayor's office in 1992. However, controversial economic policies may affect her popularity.

The new GOP congress
Article Abstract:
California has lost much of its influence in the Congress as the number of Californians holding important positions has come down. Californians such as Ron Dellums, Norman Mineta, George Miller, Brown and Pete Stark have lost their leadership positions in various committees. However, Republican Congressman David Drier holds an important post in the House Rules Committee and has access to many leaders, including the speaker, which might help California to wield some power in the Congress.

A star on the rise
Article Abstract:
Mayor Susan Golding of San Diego is likely to run for a US Senate seat or a statewide office in 1998. Golding's political mentor is Don Sipple, an adviser to presidential candidate Bob Dole's. Golding is also likely to campaign vigorously for Dole in California. Golding played an important role in bringing the Republican National Convention to San Diego, although she is quick to deny any personal benefit from hosting it.
