The HMO wars
Article Abstract:
Californians are expressing increasing dissatisfaction with the health care they receive under the managed-care system. Some families are pursuing lawsuits against the health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and some doctors feel they have lost control over medical decisions. The government has made a piecemeal attempt to legislate on aspects of HMO management, and a task force will investigate the sector, but there is little chance of systematic reform. HMOs feel customers do not understand that HMOs must avoid wasteful treatments to maintain the lower costs which differentiate them from fee-for-service plans.

Down from the pedestal
Article Abstract:
It has been common in the US for medical professionals who fail to perform to recognized standards to go unpunished or to be dismissed very quietly. However, the protected status of medical professionals has started to come under attack in California during the 1990s. Some medical professionals in California believe that it is now time to cooperate with policymakers to gain some control over what prospective patients are told about them. Doctor groups indicate that California already has very strong disclosure and disciplinary policies.
