The Republican bust of 1998
Article Abstract:
The Republican Party (GOP) in California lost heavily in the just-concluded 1998 elections. The GOP lost five seats in the Assembly, the governorship and other important state government posts. The defeat of the GOP was attributed to the low turnout of Republican voters. Democrats, however, were motivated by a more assertive labor movement and get-out-the-vote efforts. The Republican Party lost because its major themes such as crime, taxes and affirmative action did not resonate because the economy continues to be good.

A Republican triumph
Article Abstract:
The Republican party gained control of the California Assembly in Jan 1996, with the installation of Republican Assemblyman Curt Pringle as speaker. California's Democrats lost control of the Assembly largely as a result of their own mistakes. The Democrats also damaged the effectiveness of the Assembly as a lawmaking body in their attempt to remain in control. For their part, the Republicans have a responsibility to show that they deserved their victory.
