The growth rate of business investment in information technology boomed in the 1990s and 2000 before plunging in 2001. The reasons for this boom and bust were technological change and high expectations in the telecommunications service and the dot-com sector.

Recent productivity growth: the role of information technology and other innovations

The acceleration of productivity in the industries that produce IT hardware and the rapid investment in IT capital both contribute to the overall productivity acceleration. Productivity is driven by innovation that is strongly related to IT use.
