The politics of government P.R.
Article Abstract:
The office of the Californian government P.R., meant for providing information to the public about government activities, has been politicized. Appointments are made through the governor, Pete Wilson's office. The number of public information officers (PIOs) has decreased from 128 in 1992 to 75 in 1996. The statewide exam for the PIOs gives a lot of control to the department heads appointed by the governor. Journalists believe that Wilson's dislike for the media is responsible for the mismanagement of the information coming from his office.
