Incentives for the identification and treatment of children with disabilities: the supplemental security income program
Article Abstract:
The adoption of the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program in the early 1990s was instrumental in enhancing child healthcare among low-income families during the period. The program encouraged parents not only to report disease cases within their families, but also to seek medical attention for the treatment of such diseases. The trend was particularly evident for medical disorders in children. However, the introduction of more stringent SSI eligibility rules is likely to undermine the program's success.
