The separation of powers in American politics: why we fail to accentuate the positive
Article Abstract:
The separation of powers in the US constitution is usually interpreted as a restraining effect, and not as a tool for constructive, empowering purposes. This gives the impression that political balance is intended to control tyrannical impulses and produce immobility and inaction. The founding fathers formulated the roles of each branch of government to divide labor and promote efficiency.

Civic disengagement in contemporary America
Article Abstract:
The political disinterest and lack of social activity of contemporary Americans is discussed. The author argues that Americans, more than ever, are disengaged in politics, not as socially connected as they had been in the past, more distrustful, and uninterested in the common good, and calls for more social research to understand this problem.
