A closer look at the political prospects of Los Angeles, CA, focuses on its leadership in the face of the social and economic challenges besetting the city. L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan plays an essential role in steering the city towards economic development. Since assuming his post, Riordan has been adopting a results-oriented approach to government, allowing minorities to contribute their share in providing solutions to urban issues such as crime, employment and business development. The widening gap between the affluent and the less privileged is also a major economic issue being addressed.

The '97 race for mayor
Article Abstract:
Incumbent LA mayor Richard Riordan is expected to win again in the 1997 elections. He is a favorite among Anglos who set the city's election trends. Riordan is so financially sound that his opponents find it difficult to challenge him. However, his mishandling of some issues has created opportunities for opponents, such as Congressman Howard Berman and City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas.
