Authors' response to the commentaries
Article Abstract:
Total quality management (TQM) has proven its efficacy in health care, but there is still a lack of empirical research that would examine this efficacy as well as its fit with hospital structure and functions. The available literature on the application of TQM in hospitals are merely anecdotal and fail to provide insights that only systematic research can yield.

Total quality management: field of dreams?
Article Abstract:
The effectivity of total quality management (TQM) in the hospital setting has yet to be confirmed, owing to the limited literature on TQM in hospitals. The lack of empirical research fails to provide support to claims that TQM reconciles trade-offs between cost and quality, increases customer satisfaction and enhances hospitals' competitiveness and performance.
