Corporate takeover?
Article Abstract:
Wall Street investors have been very pleased with the financial management of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corp under Pres and Chmn Rick Scott, because the hospital has aggressively acquired other for-profit and non-profit hospitals to build market share and achieve economies of scale. Columbia/HCA's financial success is also attributed to reducing excess capacity, eliminating duplicated services and introducing other cost-efficient management structures. Consolidation and use of information systems are likely to be significant ways for hospitals to achieve cost efficiency.

Article Abstract:
Hospitals face increasing pressure from managed care insurers, patients and Medicare to reduce medical costs and develop cost-effective management structures. However, reduced Medicare payments and more managed care contracts are decreasing hospital revenues faster than hospitals can cut costs. The long term financial stability of hospitals also could be compromised by financial risk from capitated contracts and reduced medical staff.
