Eroding empires
Article Abstract:
Doctors once ruled the medical world, but the emergence of managed care systems has changed their position of dominance to one of economic struggle and a rush to join health maintenance organizations. Physicians remaining in private practice resent their colleagues for becoming part of the threat to private practice. Medical center staffs once functioned well by referring patients back and forth, but in the 1990s, their responsibilities have greatly increased.

Physicians' silence can be deadly
Article Abstract:
Many physicians place their female patients at risk by failing to provide adequate preventive medicine. Physicians often neglect to ask women about their unhealthy habits including, smoking, drinking, poor diet and lack of exercise. Cost pressures exerted by managed care administrators often limit the amount of time doctors can commit to preventative care.
