Doctors turned programmers
Article Abstract:
Some doctors are writing their own computer programs for in-house use, while others are creating software for use by managed care providers and other physicians. For example, physicians Kate Templeton, Hal Manhart and Drew Palin have teamed up with executive Beth Frost-Johnson to found ThinkMed, a firm that is dedicated to producing 'physician intelligent' programs. ThinkMed has produced ThinkMed Expert, which tracks cases through billing and claims information then analyzes where costs could be cut.

Getting the picture
Article Abstract:
Picture archiving and communications systems using digital technology will take the place of conventional x-ray technology and increase the capability of radiologists to read images at a remote location. Although the systems cost millions of dollars, they will greatly improve the quality of images and cut some expenses, such as x-ray film, which is costly and difficult to handle. The radiologist also saves time otherwise spent in travel.
