Survival of the biggest
Article Abstract:
Hospital company Tenet Healthcare and practice management company MedPartners have agreed to an alliance that will create California's largest healthcare provider network. Tenet's Bill Leyhe said that the alliance is vital to the company's survival in Southern California. Low occupancy rates and expected closures are forcing Tenet and other regional hospitals to join networks and streamline their operations, he explained. Consummate Consumer's Marti Ann Schwartz, however, said that such alliances create monopolies.

Going to court for clout
Article Abstract:
Physicians are joining physician practice management groups to fight for the issues that concern them against hospitals and insurance groups. These physician practice management groups will someday have similar powers to labor unions, with doctors placing their needs ahead of hospitals and payers. When physicians are formally organized they will have greater clout, but in 1997 they must continue to fight what hospitals want from them.
