Electronic fetal monitoring then and now
Article Abstract:
Fetal monitoring has changed in technology, terminology, and clinical standards in the past 25 years. Electronic monitors were not available until the mid-1970s, whereas they are now standard diagnostic tools. While a single set of standardized nomenclatures is not used throughout the profession, documentation has moved from narrative notes to computerized systems and archiving tracings. International efforts continue to develop universal nomenclature and to make electronic fetal monitoring more effective.
