Explaining variations in inpatient length of stay in the National Health Service
Article Abstract:
Variations of the length of stay (LOS) of patients in the UK's National Health Service (NHS) were studied by examining data from Hospital Episode Statistics for 4,545 small areas for the period 1991-1992. While the patient and hospital characteristics were considered to be the most important factors in determining LOS, it was postulated that the local supply of NHS care, local pressure on NHS resources, other supply factors and local policy effects should also be considered. It was discovered that while variations in LOS for all age groups were minimal, the variability for over-65 age group was high.

Price and profit
Article Abstract:
The conclusions of two studies regarding factors that influence hospital pricing are problematic. One of the studies was conducted by David Dranove et al., while the other was made by Emmett Keeler et al. Both suggest that factors that affect hospital pricing have the same effect on both for-profit and non-profit hospitals. However, an examination of the Michigan hospital pricing data indicate that non-profits' characterization of hospital pricing are different that of for-profits.
