Nonprofit organization Positive Medicine is trumpeting the achievements of 50 standout physicians. The group will distribute profiles of the doctors to medical schools. Dayton, OH's Gary L. Le Roy, one of the profiled doctors, works in the hospital in which he was born and at an inner-city health center. He advises young people to not accept the stereotypes placed upon them. Information on physicians Jerry Cade and Helen Cappuccino is included.

Norwalk, CT-based HMO Oxford Health Plans will allow members with expensive-to-treat or chronic ailments to pick a specialist without getting a referral from a gatekeeper physician. The new system will cause significant changes in the ways physicians are evaluated and paid. Doctors will be paid by case rate. The new system intends to increase specialists' control over care, but specialists will remain financially accountable.

ConnectiCare Inc has started an incentive program to reward physicians for quality care. The Primary Care Recognition Program rates doctors according to various criteria and allows them to accumulate up to 25 points that are rewarded with bonuses. Criteria include communication with patient and patient referrals. The health maintenance organization uses the data it collects to determine resource management strategies.
