First-quarter data show slower inflation, strong jobs growth
Article Abstract:
Hospital employment grew and inflationary pressures declined in 1st qtr 1992. Growth occurred in outpatients, expenses, and revenues, while decline occurred in average length of stay and number of inpatients. According to Economic Trends, a publication of the economic studies division of the American Hospital Association, the number of hospital employees rose 1.1% compared to 1st qtr 1991. Cost per patient grew only 8%, the lowest growth rate in 15 years. Aggregate net patient margin was 2.7% compared to 1.1% in 1st quarter 1991.

Article Abstract:
Hospital costs grew 9.7% in the first three quarters of 1992, according to figures from an American Hospital Assn survey. Total hospital revenue was 10.1% higher than in the first nine months of 1991. Utilization, including inpatient and outpatient equivalent, grew 1.3% for the same period. Outpatient visits to community hospitals increased 6.5%, which offset a decreased number of inpatients. Also presented are labor expenses, inflation data and analysis of revenue margins.

The American Hospital Association's National Hospital Panel Survey indicates that community hospitals maintained a positive financial position in 1991, overall. Year-end data reveals that inpatient utilization, outpatient visits and personnel growth declined or remained flat in 1991. Total admissions fell 1.1% and total expenses increased 9.9%.
