Mergers between Catholic hospitals and for-profit health systems are increasing despite questions of philosophical compatibility between the two organizations. Merger proponents are concerned that patient care will be compromised by denied access to emerging technologies, reproductive and life-saving treatments that Catholic facilities do not provide. However, many Catholic hospitals are developing strong networks with non-Catholic providers in an effort to keep their doors open.

Hospitals and and nursing homes across the US that are planning to develop subacute units should be aware that of the complexity of that endeavor. Subacute care executive Sister Janet Henry says that it is crucial for hospital CEOs to understand that the subacute care business is a very different one from acute care. One of the major issues that must be properly handled is the documentation of patient care. Documentation for subacute care must be highly detailed.

Hospitals that do not contract with outside services suppliers mistakenly believe that outsourcing creates a cost burden, according to Louden & Co's Michael Boroch. Survey results show that the CEOs of most hospitals feel that outsourcing is cost efficient. Some 90% of hospitals using contract services outsource support services, while 77% outsource clinical services.
