Growing pains
Article Abstract:
A survey of executives of physician/hospital organizations (PHOs) indicate that many have failed to achieve their initial objectives in the first year of operation. A primary problem involves physicians working with hospitals to create a useful and communicative relationship. The high costs of starting a PHO, most of which are covered by the hospital, has also caused strain in the relations. Yet most executives said that communications were improving, their focus was clarified, and hopes were high for the future.

The great debate: resolved, PSOs are going to be regulated. The question is, will they get what they want?
Article Abstract:
The healthcare industry is debating whether provider-sponsored organizations (PSOs) should be regulated separately or should be treated as health maintenance organizations. PSOs generally want their own rules, but health insurers disagree. PSOs, which provide healthcare services directly to employees of companies that contract them, argue that the risks that they take are simply business risks. Insurers feel that PSOs' risk is an insurance risk that should be regulated the same way as insurance pools.

Scoping out 1995: how experts see the health care year unfolding
Article Abstract:
Health care analysts predict that managed care will continue to increase, at the behest of corporate cost control measures, in 1995. Utilization will decrease among the under-65 population, as will facility space and hospital staff. The health care market will see steady consolidation, in spite of inefficiency concerns. Historically, the health of the general economy has not affected the economics of the health care industry, and a downturn will not be reflected in hospitals' budgets and services.
