Health care surveys: pollsters present debatable results
Article Abstract:
Agreement between the public and political leaders on issues pertaining to health care reform may not be as close as national public opinion polls indicate. According to a Public Agenda Foundation report, 'Faulty Diagnosis,' the public and political leaders may not be addressing the same issue when they express opinions about high medical costs. The public tends to attribute high medical costs to waste and greed. It may be difficult for political leaders to earn support for specific health care reform proposals until the waste issue is addressed to the public's satisfaction.

Hospitals should benefit from new geriatrics plan
Article Abstract:
SmithKline Beecham has donated $1.5 million to create a center for excellence in geriatric medicine at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center. The new center will help train geriatric professionals in a field that is chronically short of caregivers. About 1/3 of all hospital admissions were 65 years and older in 1991. The US, with some 4,084 certified geriatric physicians, is in need of about 20,000 physicians to deliver medical services to 30 million elderly patients.

Polling: searching for the non-biased sample
Article Abstract:
Gallup Organization Inc's chief methodologist, Jack Ludwig, asserts that questioning a cross-section of the population is crucial to attaining objective opinion poll results. To maximize the response rate, Gallup pollsters attempt to reach 85% of the homes called by dialing each number five or six times if necessary. Despite Gallup's efforts achieve a random sample, groups such as the indigent and young males are often underrepresented.
