Health insurance, health reform, and outpatient mental health treatment: who benefits?
Article Abstract:
Extending the coverage of health insurance to previously uninsured individuals tends to result in a subsequent increase in the demand for mental health treatment, as revealed by the 1987 National Medical Expenditure Survey and the Epidemiologic Catchment Area Study. Results indicate the the level of uninsured individuals seeking for mental health treatment rises by as much as 40% when coverage is extended. Such an increase in demand, however, is not enough in meeting the financial needs of mental patients.
