Hospitals' vertical integration into skilled nursing: a rational approach to controlling transaction costs
Article Abstract:
A study examines the 1,523 nongovernmental, acute care, urban hospitals across the US that took part in a survey conducted by the American Hospital Association in 1985 and 1989. Results revealed that a hospital's ownership of skilled nursing facilities helps reduce health costs such as post-acute patient transfers. The ownership of nursing facilities, however, does not often guarantee quality nursing care and could sometimes be more costly.
