How does Catholic hospital sponsorship affect services provided?
Article Abstract:
Catholic hospitals are responsible for delivering a significant portion of medical services in the US. Unlike other types of hospitals, Catholic hospitals offer compassionate care services such as pastoral care and ethics consultation services free of charge. Since they are tax-exempt organizations, they have greater ability in delivering appropriate health care services. Their continued ability to offer these services to a greater number of people, including those who do not belong to their denomination would help them in lobbying for the continuance of their tax-exempt status.

Further evidence that hospital production is inefficient
Article Abstract:
The study revealed that the level of inefficiency of hospital production remained high and constant within the years 1982-1993. This is most evident in the growth of capital and labor expenditures in spite of the proliferation of managed care and the cost control efforts in the industry. The increase in the industry's efficiency could be attributed to the closure of some facilities. Seeing that the study ended in 1993, it predicts that effeciency level has since then improved.

Church ownership and hospital efficiency
Article Abstract:
The relatively high efficiency of church-owned hospitals in California suggests that allowing such hospitals to retain their tax-exempt status would be a wise economic policy. Data envelopment analysis revealed that church-owned hospitals are more efficient than other nonprofit hospitals, when hospital location, size, system membership, and kind of church affiliation are taken into account.
