Maturing market: gaps narrow among emergency room physicians' salaries
Article Abstract:
The average salary increase for emergency room physicians has slowed to 8.6% between 1992 and 1993, down from 14.8% between 1990 and 1991. Experienced physicians are seeing their salaries level off because the contract management groups they work for want to offer higher salaries to new recruits. In addition, younger physicians are being promoted at a faster rate, and there is pressure for pay scales to be calculated fairly. Emergency room physicians may benefit from health reform by being compensated for the primary care they provide, but could lose money if reform shifts non-urgent patients elsewhere.

Straight talk: doctor-driven systems tell how they've gained physician allies
Article Abstract:
There are several methods for getting traditionally independent physicians to join integrated health networks or group practices. For example, some physicians can be lured with the promise of a large salary or motivated by a health network that is expertly managed. Health networks can also attract and keep physicians by involving them in organization's decision making. Additional methods for attracting physicians and managing health care networks are described.
