Workers cite senior managers' low visibility
Article Abstract:
A survey of 61,000 US health care employees recently revealed several concerns about hospital management. For example, 55% of respondents complained about the low visibility of hospital administrators, and 53% felt that they were paid too little. However, 91% of respondents felt personally responsible for the quality of their work, and 69% felt that their peers were qualified to provide the best possible patient care. Hospital administration, human resources and pediatric units registered the highest job satisfaction.

Medical execs rising: today's VPMAs are high-profile and strategy savvy

The role of vice president of medical affairs (VPMA) is evolving into a high profile position that requires a great deal of strategy savvy. The position of VPMA used to be a part-time job, but new demands have turned the job into one that demands full-time attention. A VPMA survey reveals that 96% of the respondents are male, at an average age of 54 years and spend about 49 hours a week on management duties.

Primary care physicians still in demand
Article Abstract:
A survey of 250 hospital CEOs found that 40% of them are currently recruiting more primary care physicians than they ever have in the past. THe CEO of the 444-bed Medical Center of Central Massachusetts says he hired six primary care doctors in 1990 and hired 28 in 1992. Hospitals claim they recruit doctors for primary care positions through their own residency programs and by word of mouth.
