Maximizing purchase decision factors other than price
Article Abstract:
Hospital materiel managers considering the purchase of medical equipment can base decisions on factors other than price with the help of ECRI which allows hospitals to successfully manage the acquisition of new technology. The nonprofit organization tests medical devices for its member hospitals and issues reports on product defects. ECRI also provides hospitals, health professionals, insurance carriers and lawyers with forensic engineering and litigation support services. ECRI's information systems, publications and consulting services benefit healthcare facilities as well.

The materiel management in effective equipment planning
Article Abstract:
Materiel management processes fill an important role in planning for the acquisition of capital equipment. Equipment acquisition in hospitals is achieved either through the budget process or through coordination with significant construction projects. The acquisition process starts with the 'wish lists' of various departments followed by capital budget decision-making. Among the steps in the acquisition process are assessment of needs, planning for service coverage, evaluation of existing technology and investigation of sample devices.

Hospital materiel management in Taiwan: a survey
Article Abstract:
Inventory turnovers and fill rates for Taiwanese hospitals are found to vary but are quite good compared to US standards. Possible areas for improvement include the removal of fuzzy-type hospitals, the use of multiple purchasing modes, setting of safety stocks for more than 60% of items, use of good lead time estimations, the use of stock rotation, a higher percentage of just-in-time deliveries among others.
