Networks & numbers: is accreditation slow to change with the times?
Article Abstract:
The current medical accreditation process focuses on individual aspects of a health care system rather than the entire delivery of the health care. It is important for consumers to be able to evaluate medical networks equally. There should be a minimum performance level and a standardized evaluation process so that consumers realize the services that they will and will not receive. Accreditation by the National Committee for Quality Assurance is required by 12 major US companies.

Cut to the quick: hospitals face bleak choices as Congress debates Medicare's future
Article Abstract:
Substantial Medicare cutbacks, as proposed by Republican lawmakers, would seriously affect hospitals and the communities they serve. But the cutbacks' effects would vary for different types of hospitals in different communities. Caring for Medicare patients already costs Hampton, IA's Franklin General Hospital about $1 million a year, and further cutbacks would probably force it out of business.

RUG burn
Article Abstract:
The introduction of prospective payment to skilled nursing could may affect hospital-based nursing units more than nursing homes. That is because, under prospective payment, Medicare will not cover nursing home administrative costs, and hospital nursing units have higher fixed costs. That situation could benefit contract suppliers of subacute and skilled nursing services.
