OTA takes closer look at cost of drugs
Article Abstract:
The Congressional Office of Technology Assessment has released a report stating that pharmaceutical manufacturers made an average of $36 million in 'excess profit' for each drug introduced between 1981 and 1983. Sen Henry A. Waxman, who requested the report, stated that pharmaceutical costs can be reduced without harming research and development costs. He said that many drugs are developed and released to compete against nearly identical drugs that are already on the market.

GAO highlights obstacles to Medicaid enrollment
Article Abstract:
Hospitals in the District of Columbia are treating more uninsured patients because budget constraints prevent them from hiring enough workers to submit applications for Medicaid coverage. These conditions prevail in other locations also. A General Accounting Office report shows that the law requiring states to provide services fails to help hospitals increase staff. Hospital managers believe the application process must be simplified.
