Life threatening emergencies can surface in a cancer patient and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurses should have a basic understanding of the assessment and treatment of the three most common cancer-related emergencies. Cardiac tamponade occurs when fluid is retained in the pericardial sac and can result in circulatory collapse. Superior vena cava syndrome is the result of an obstruction of the superior vena cava often from a tumor or thrombosis. Article Abstract:
Critical care nurses should prepare themselves to handle the challenges of treating a cancer patient in the intensive care unit. Advances in chemotherapy and other cancer treatments has led to increased hope for life-saving treatments and consequently more patients spending time in the intensive care unit. Nurses must weigh their knowledge of prognosis and survivability with their knowledge of technological innovations and their duties as caregivers. Expanded education and knowledge of chemotherapy administration can help nurses meet the needs of patients.

Antineoplastic agents
Article Abstract:
Critical care nurses should increase their scope of knowledge concerning antineoplastic therapy in the treatment of cancer. As cancer treatments become more technologically advanced and patients are able to tolerate higher chemotherapy doses, the patient acquires more toxicities in their internal organs. Identification and management of antineoplastic agents is crucial to patient care and the prevention of liver, kidney, lung, and other organ damage.
