Outpatient use of cardiac caths poised for growth
Article Abstract:
Diagnostic cardiac catheterization may become an outpatient procedure, if advocates of managed care prevail. Many physicians see no danger in allowing a patient to go home after six-eight hours in the hospital, but more conservative cardiologists are waiting to examine statistical data on results. The usage of cardiac catheterization has increased dramatically, with 995,000 performed in 1991, compared to 77,000 in 1970. The service will probably be performed only in hospitals having cardiac surgery capability.

'UR' pharmacists help MDs control drug costs
Article Abstract:
Many hospitals recommend utilization review to educate physicians about criteria for prescribing expensive antibiotics and biotechnology drugs. For example, St Elizabeth's Hospital, Boston, MA, has saved $120,000 in the first year since appointing a full-time pharmacist to consult with doctors about their prescriptions. Hospitals also limit access to staff by pharmaceutical salespersons.
