Preterm birth in the United States: current issues and future perspectives
Article Abstract:
Considerable research from 1987-1997 has not significantly established a cause-and-effect relationship between common risk factors and premature birth. However, bed rest, home uterine activity monitoring, and the use of tocolytics have had some positive effects. Early identification and treatment of bacterial vaginosis, modifications to the lifestyles of all pregnant women, and using antocin to treat acute preterm labor are beginning to reduce the numbers of preterm births while improving chances for infant survival.
