Meeting employer needs in the managed care request for proposal process
Article Abstract:
Hospital employers have recognized the importance of implementing health programs such as managed care to meet the spiralling costs of health care. However, administrators should ensure that selection of managed care programs are based on accessibility, affordability, cost-effectiveness and quality service. Several approaches on how the request for proposal (RFP) process specifications can be implemented to ensure effective vendor evaluation and selection are presented. These guidelines will greatly benefit hospitals since it will promote cost savings in the long run.

Hospitals are faced with increasing pressure from both sponsors and purchasers of health benefit plans to develop specific approaches for managed care such as the point of service (POS) model of managed care. As a result, it has become necessary for hospitals to assess the opportunities and financial incentives of participating in managed care arrangements. Several guidelines which will help hospitals in decision-making regarding their options for managed care participation are presented and discussed.

Consumer doubts against the capabilities of managed care programs to control the escalating costs of health care continue despite attempts by government to address the issue. Thus, reform proposals which focus on the maintenance of cost-effective managed care programs have been presented. Of these, value management, which entails the identification of variables that affect the health care system, has been identified as the most significant policy concerning managed care cost containment.
